Your Grades are Posted

If you have a creative writing piece for me, please email it: marcusschwager@gmail.com. Also, I will probably be changing the address of this blog for next year to make it easier to type in, etc. It will probably be longbowsong.blogspot.com...but we will see. The longbow reference is from Tales of the Longbow by G.K. Chesterton. I have in mind to start a literary society: The Longbow Literary League. Enjoy, Mr. S

All the best!

Rogation Days: "To Ask"

Rogation Days: "To Ask"; in England, this was a traditional time to ask God for mercy on their lives and crops and such (Mon.-Wed.).  Priests would walk the perish and pray for blessing over all within.  For Mother's day, each of us chose something for mom, and we planted it.  My contributions were cut flowers indoors and an eastern cultivar red bud tree for the front...she loves the red bud.

Next Year's Classes

Our school is offering dual course credit courses, and some are tied to AP classes.  One must have a finished masters degree to teach such a course, and I have not finished mine yet.  So, Mrs. Danielski (who does) will be teaching AP English Literature next year.  Mr. O'Donnell is teaching Latin I and II, and Mr. Reno is teaching the Classical Literature and Shakespeare course.

Seniors, please encourage your underclassmen friends to take these great courses.

Sophomores, take Latin and Classical literature.

Ohho, Rachel, John Angel, Crystal, and Evan, consider AP Composition with Mr. Holtzclaw.  Anyone else, see me before you sign up for his class.

Blessings,

Mr. S

Uncommon Colons

American English in 1945 (from the Book of Common Prayer; see below).

In the prayer for Maundy (Mandate or Commandment) Thursday, notice the two semicolons. The first has a capital following because it's an independent clause. The second does not because it is a dependent clause. In MLA, neither word following the semicolon (or a colon) would be capitalized.

In the Bible text (I Cor. 11:23), notice the three colons in a row. MLA would require apostrophes.

The Best Thing in the World for a Teacher...

is when a wonderful student goes on to do wonderful things.  Here's an example...Candace Blanton (maiden name Miser) directing this children's musical fresh out of college.  I taught Candace AP Lit. and her husband, Josh, regular English.  Bravo!

Daniel Ch. 5

"Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.
They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone."

Bad idea.
...

17: Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18: O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:
19: And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
20: But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:
21: And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
22: And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
23: But hast lifted up thyself against the LORD of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
24: Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.
25: And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
26: This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.
27: TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
28: PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29: Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30: In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
31: And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

The Handwriting is on the Blog

Some wonder if handwriting is necessary now that we are in a digital age and have iPads, etc.  I've collected some articles that support the idea that handwriting might just help you:

Become less stressed and healthier (click: LA Times
Get smarter (click: WSJ)
Become less distracted (click: Atlantic)
Remember more of your notes and so finish homework/studying earlier (click:Science News, Education News)
Learn more in less time (click: Lifehacker)

So the muscular and digital is a good combination for us.

A Good Family

We wonder what a husband and wife really are biblically...is submission really part of the equation?

Another student asked me what I thought about last week's speaker's parents leaving him at a school to pursue their mission.  Is that good?

Both treat the nature of the family, and my pastor is doing an excellent series on it.  So, I'll provide some good links for you.

Greater Gardens, Batman!

My March Term class filled up, but I can handle a few more, so they increased the class limit.

If you'd like to take the class, feel free to join.  If you already selected your classes, you'll probably have to change the class by visiting your adviser in student services.

Our main project will be changing the nasty-shrubishness in front of the library into a clean, beautiful space with benches and potted plants for outside study.  We probably won't finish this in one week, but will get it well on the way.  We will also cover the general basics of grass seeding, bush trimming, planting, and the like (you will receive up to 15 hrs of community service).

Blessings,

Mr. S

Love is Strong as Death

The Grammy awards are this Sunday, and I won't watch them; however, I'll venture a guess. There are only four categories, but I would be surprised if Adele does not walk away with something.

What does she sing about? Something fresh as a wound; something as old as the world: Love in a fallen world.

Consider Song of Solomon 8:6:
[F]or love is strong as death,
jealousy is cruel as the grave;
the coals thereof are coals of fire
which hath a most vehement flame.

Compare the fire to:
Adele: "Fire to the Rain"

Compare the death to:
Perry: "If I Die Young"

Those are not assignments, just for thought.

Happy Birthday, Charles Dickens

200 years ago today, Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England.

Did you know that UCSC has a Dickens Project (like a club or society...but with a different name because it's UCSC)? Well, you do now.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Someone asked me about allusion in the title "The Unknown Citizen" by W.H. Auden.

The answer is The Tomb of the Unknowns (it has never officially been named) at Arlington National Cemetery (for fallen American soldiers in certain modern wars who could not be identified) in Arlington, Virginia.

Here is a picture of the amphitheater.  Note the national treasures buried in the cornerstone.

And what do we read over the west entrance?  "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori."

This also echoes Paul's Mars' Hill sermon in Acts 17 where he speaks of the altar "To the Unknown God."

Seniors going to a Junior College Next Year: Get an invitation from Student Services

The room for the CA Community College presentation is   D – 13,     and senior students who have indicated that they are, or may be community college bound will be given an invitation and pass on Tuesday during 2nd period.  They are to give the pass to their regular Advisory teacher ahead of time (ideally) and show up in   D-13 right at 1:00 pm because presentation will start then.
There is much information to go over and hopefully time for questions.   Attendance will be taken both days.
