Weeks 5–6: Ballad of the White Horse

 Hi friends,

Well, we are finishing up our first major text, The Ballad of the White Horse by Gilbert Keith Chesterton.  We will consider G.K.C.'s thoughts on pagan and Christian views of life, God, battle, love, death, and whatever else we find as we read.

We will also begin working on our research project.

And we will all head off on our own adventure to Twain Harte!

Friday, Sept. 17, 2021

 Hi friends,

Well, Mr. Schwager has also succumbed to the cold.  I don't feel that badly, just have a running nose, so I expect I'll be back on Monday.  Today is a day to work quietly on your story and your reading.  If it is a warm, sunny morning, and your substitute teacher would like to, you may work on the courtyard tables.

Today, I want you to do three things:

1. Look over the comments from the essays and/or stories I have graded.  (5–10 min.)

2. Have someone in class look over your story and give feedback. Look at pg. 178 in Writers Inc. for a good writing rubric for this assignment. Give your peer feedback using those categories of focus. Write comments directly on their pages.  (15–20 min.)

3. Read through the end of Book II of The Ballad of the White Horse. Don't worry if you find it confusing; we will discuss it together starting Monday. Note three questions or comments for us to answer or consider next week when we meet to discuss the poem (for instance, you could ask about things that are confusing you). Just put your questions on sticky notes or note cards slipped into the page where your question comes up.  (30 min.)

Your homework is to complete those things above. Whatever is not completed in class becomes homework. Note that I will be quizzing you on the memorization poem on Wednesday.

Week 4: Sept. 13–17

Hi friends,

This week we read an example of people who mediated on Psalm 23 and knew it by heart; God provided strength and courage to them through it as they faced unimaginable horror (Flight 93). There is good reason to keep God's word in your mind and heart; you will have it stored for the day of trial...we will all face days of trial.

You will write a creative story this week.  And we will begin our first longer work, The Ballad of the White Horse by G. K. Chesterton.

Enjoy,

Mr. S

Week 3: Sept. 6–10, 2021

 Hi friends,

This week we write our second college essay and learn how to go beyond thinking of writing as a "pile of words" and more like a strong athletic performance.  Thus, we will utilize our Writers Inc. books quite a bit.

 Enjoy,

 Mr. S

Week 2: Monday, Aug 30

Hi friends,

Our college essay unit continues.  What qualities do you have that communicate to your peers? Today you will find out. You will also read a college essay example from a sound student (she applied to UC Berkeley as was accepted).

Please use the lesson plan link on the left to see the details and homework.  Let's begin writing our first college application pieces!
