Wednesday, 9/11/13: College Essay #1

* Open
  • Opening Grammar Correction:
    • "The extent of enfluence exercised by the latin language upon the celtic dialects cannot be determined it seems to have been slight and on the other hand it may be safely assumed that the celtic did not contribute much to the world-absorbing latin" (Coppee 25).
  • The Lord's Prayer
  • Caedmon's Hymn

* College Essay Examples
* College Essay #1
  • Mr. Promptitude
  • Pick a part and read to us (this is a technical note on the sentence you just read: you do not need to add the usual comma joining two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction if the clauses are so short that no misreading could occur).
  • If in doubt, read your opening.
  • How interesting is the opening?
  • Do we learn a good deal about the writer (especially if this is the personal statement)?
  • Is there a central, memorable image in this piece?
  • Does this read more like a committee-composed textbook or a stirring piece of fiction?
If we finish early, we will begin Beowulf.
