Wednesday, 2/4/14: Prepare the Way

* Open
  • Add to notes
    • In a short essay (less than five pages), keep quotations as short as possible (do not pad your essay).  In analysis (such as AP), you want frequent, brief quotations for support. You will probably end up with 10-20% of your essay being short quotation.
    • In essay analysis, after you quote, you must tie the quote back to the topic or thesis with your shrewd commentary.  Do not end a body paragraph with a quotation.
    • Do not let a quote stand by itself as an isolated sentence in an essay; it should be woven into you own sentence.
      • Good: Foolishly, Johnny told Jim to "Kick that skunk."
      • Bad: Johnny told Jim to do a foolish thing.  "Kick that skunk."

    • I will quiz you on quotations (and vocab. and notes) at the end of next week.
* Work on your proposal and satire.

HW:
  • Two RD pages of your champion or satire CWP (turnitin=no)
  • Typed, one page proposal (everyone writes one) (turnitin=yes)
