Journal Entries

Each entry must be handwritten (unless otherwise noted) and single spaced. 
Journal 1:
  • Review your music collection.  Find a song that reflects a theme you've discovered in That Hideous Strength.  Copy down at least one sentence from the song and explain the reflection you found. This needs to be one full page or longer in your composition book (one side, single spaced).
Journal 2:  
  • Describe a time that a phone or iPad brought about a sad, complicated, or horrible situation.  No length requirement (any number of complete sentences is fine).

Journal 3: 
  • College Essay RD--Tonight, please write a college essay rough draft for any prompt of your choice (essay, Common App, personal statement, scholarship).  "Rough" means complete in length only.  Please write this first draft in your composition book.  The following links may prove helpful:
* Peer Review of Journal 3.  Please copy the bold words below.  Then rank them 1 to 5 (1 = I do not find this; 5 = this is clearly evident).  This essay:
  1. is a memorable piece:
  2. features a strong central image:
  3. reveals the writer's personality:
  4. shows the student will be a blessing or asset to the school:
  5. contains a turn or reversal (is not cliche, boring, tedious, or obvious):
  6. is solidly composed (structure and grammar help rather than hinder communication of key ideas):

Journal 11: In at least one well-developed paragraph, explain key facets that show The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a Romantic literary production.

Journal 13: Pride and Prejudice
  • You will find our study guide on Focus. 
  • Your journal assignment for this novel is to answer at least one question for every other chapter of your reading from the guide.  
  • With 61 chapters, that means you will have 31 entries that span the course of your reading (at least one response every other chapter you read). 
  • These must be handwritten and in your binder.  Answer all parts of the question and always write in complete sentences. 
  • At least one in every five responses must be a paragraph of response (5-7 sentences or more).  
  • You will not receive credit if you simply find the easiest question and answer in the simplest fashion.  
  • Answers that have grammatical errors will not count toward the 31 total.
