- Note the following: The title of That Hideous Strength comes from a late medieval poem by Scottish poet (Sir) David Lyndsay. A "strength" is a stronghold. In his poem, Lyndsay describes the Tower of Babel as "that hyddeous strength," an evil stronghold (also read Genesis 11), which it was.
- From Old English: strengþu, strengð (ð is an eth..."dh" or "th" from Icelandic, etc.): "bodily power, force, vigor, firmness, fortitude, manhood, violence, moral resistance." Consider that, hideous __________.
